About this course
Course Snapshot
In this course, you will engage with Modules 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3:
Module 1.1: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in the TETE classroom
This module explores a range of activities to develop the 5 core SEL competencies. Through SEL, students develop self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills to cope with every challenge and improve learning and wellbeing. In this module, you will:
- learn the 5 SEL competencies and why it is important to cultivate these competencies in high school students.
- engage collaboratively in a range of activities related to the 5 core SEL competencies.
- reflect on and discuss potential application of SEL in practice and in your EFL classrooms.
Module 1.2: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) int the TETE classroom
This module introduces you to PBL principles and how to apply them in everyday practice to enhance student engagement and learning. In this module, you will:
- learn the fundamental principles and applications of PBL.
- explore a range of PBL scenarios specifically designed for high school students.
- reflect on and discuss potential application of PBL in practice.
Module 1.3: Universal Design in Learning (UDL): Strategies for engaging all learners
This module explores a range of strategies and tools based on UDL principles to enhance students’ engagement with and understanding of teaching content. In this module, you will:
- learn about the fundamentals of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and how it can be used to engage your students.
- engage collaboratively with a range of UDL activities related to the 3 core competencies.
- evaluate the suitability of the UDL strategies and tools for participants’ classrooms.

This course is suited for Taiwanese English Language teachers and has been developed by Griffith English Language Institute (GELI) in support of Taiwan Government’s Bilingual 2030 Plan. You can learn more about the GELI here.
Participants who complete this course will receive a digital Certificate of Completion from GELI.
You will attend 3 x interactive online sessions with a GELI teacher-facilitator for the three modules in this course. Each session is 90 mins.
Prior to each session, you will complete a short activity e.g. read a short document, view a digital resource or respond to a question(s) related to the module.
After each module/session, you will complete a 5-question quiz or a reflection question to consolidate your learning. This activity will be approximately 10 mins. This activity will need to be completed within seven days at the end of each module/session.

Cara Nunez
Cara Nunez began her teaching career in 2000, as an ALT in the Japan Exchange Teaching program. In 2004, she enhanced her pedagogy in multiple intelligence acquisition, working for a Howard Gardner Institute in Mexico and specialises in content and language integrated learning (CLIL). Her early passion for teaching and learning directed her to complete a master’s degree in educational practices at Bond University and joining the GELI teaching team in 2007. At GELI she has taught on all ELICOS direct entry programs, in addition to the High School Preparation (HSP) program, specialised groups, such as National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) TESOL teachers and Mixed English for Academic Purposes (MEAP). During this period, Cara also coordinated Study of Societies and Intercultural Studies at Griffith College and provided domestic mature-aged students the opportunity to consolidate and extend senior English Studies through Griffith Bridging English. She embarked on a year in China instructing at Deqing, Qiushi High School and Xuzhou, Chinese University of Mining and Technology.
