About this course

Griffith Chem is a two year program conducted across Years 11 & 12. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of the Chemical Sciences. The program is designed to complement your school's chemistry curriculum and you will study much of the content of the course within your normal chemistry classroom.

Please do not enrol unless you have first completed the Year 11 Application Form and have received approval to enrol.

What are the course learning outcomes?

After successfully completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic chemical principles and concepts
  • Apply chemical knowledge to solving simple chemistry problems
What core topics are offered?

This course is equivalent to first-year university courses, and includes many of the topics covered in the Year 11 and Year 12 Physics syllabus. However, some topics will be new and/or covered in more detail to what you will learn in your classroom.

The aims of this course are to:

  • Introduce students to the basic theory and experimental methods of chemistry
  • Encourage students to apply the knowledge and skills gained to practical situations in the chemical, physical, biological, environmental, health and material sciences
  • Provide knowledge and skills fundamental to other courses with chemistry requirements
Who is this course suited to?

Griffith Chem is a two year program conducted across Years 11 & 12. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of the Chemical Sciences. The program is designed to complement your school's chemistry curriculum and you will study much of the content of the course within your normal chemistry classroom.

What are the course credentials?

If you successfully complete Griffith Chem over the two years you will be eligible for credit for a first semester Griffith University chemistry course (providing that course is a core requirement in the degree) and receive two adjustments to your Selection Rank when applying for entry into an eligible Griffith undergraduate degree program.

What does my course schedule look like?

This course is self-paced, designed in modules to be completed in your own time.The assessment for the course will consist of two exams:

  • Stage 1 at the end of Term 4, Year 11, and
  • Stage 2 at the beginning of Term 4, Year 12.

Students who pass the Year 11 exam (>50%) will be invited to participate in the Year 12 part of the course. Students will then need >50% in the Year 12 exam to pass the course.
